FAQ

Straight answers before you book, no fine print

This is the same request that starts Owen’s walkthrough process — he or Sofia calls you back personally, usually the same day, with a crew size, truck size, and hourly rate for your Newton-area move, never a rerouted call-center rep.

Straight answers to what people ask before booking with Blue Line Movers — pricing, coverage, how the truck-sizing thing actually works, and what to expect if your move needs to happen sooner than two weeks from now. Anything not covered here, call (617) 429-6053 and Sofia or Owen will answer directly.

Is Blue Line Movers an actual moving company, or are you just matching me with a carrier?
Yes. Blue Line Movers is a fully licensed and insured moving company based right here in Newton — not a lead broker or a booking platform. Our own trucks and our own uniformed crew show up on every job, registered with the Massachusetts DPU for the moves we run inside the state, with US DOT and MC authority on file for interstate work. If you call us, you’re hiring us, not getting handed off to whoever bid lowest on your job.
How much does a local move in Newton cost?
Local moves are billed hourly: $135/hr for a 2-mover crew, $175/hr for 3 movers, $215/hr for 4, and $45/hr for each additional mover beyond that. Flat-rate pricing is also available if you’d rather have a fixed number going in — roughly $475–$675 for a studio, $675–$975 for a one-bedroom, $975–$1,475 for a two-bedroom, and $1,475–$2,150 for a three-bedroom-plus. Larger households get an hourly quote once Derek’s walked the place. A $150 deposit holds your date and is credited to the final bill.
What actually makes Blue Line Movers different from other Newton movers?
Owen spent five years driving box trucks for a national van line that kept sending 26-foot trucks down streets they’d never actually seen — a one-way with no loading zone, a triple-decker’s back stairwell, a condo building that needed 48 hours’ notice. A lot of the reschedules came from a truck that simply couldn’t fit or a crew finding out live what they were walking into. Blue Line runs smaller trucks sized to the block, and someone scouts the address before move day, not after. It’s a logistics fix, not a pricing gimmick — the same crew, the same truck, no surprises about whether it’ll clear your driveway.
Do you offer storage if my move dates don't line up?
Yes, in our own Newton warehouse, not a subleased unit across town. Pricing is flat-rate by size: $110/month for a studio or one-bedroom’s worth of belongings, $170/month for a two- or three-bedroom, and $240/month for anything larger. It works well for a gap between a lease ending and a closing date, or for a downsizing move where furniture needs to sit for a few weeks before it finds a new home.
What happens if something gets damaged during the move?
Basic released-value coverage is included on every job at no charge. If that payout ceiling isn’t enough for what you’re moving — a piano, art, anything with real replacement value — Owen or Derek can add full replacement-value protection at your in-home walkthrough, priced to what’s actually going on the truck.
Can you move a piano or a gun safe?
Both, regularly. Pianos, upright or grand, are rigged with a piano board and real straps rather than carried down a triple-decker’s back stairs by hand, and it’s a flat $275. Gun safes run $235–$360 depending on weight and how far they need to travel from the truck to wherever they’re going. Both get scouted ahead of time along with everything else, since a safe that won’t clear a doorway is worse to discover on move day than in advance.
How far ahead do I need to book, and what's the deposit?
A $150 deposit holds your date and gets credited straight to your final invoice — it’s not an extra fee. Weekends in June and September fill up fastest, sometimes three to four weeks out, while weekday slots often open up with just a few days’ notice. Book as early as you can once you have a date, and call if your timeline is tight; we’d rather tell you honestly if a Saturday’s full than overbook the crew.
What does a long-distance move out of Newton cost?
Interstate moves typically run $750 to $5,400, depending on the route and how much is going — a studio load to Providence sits at the low end, a full house down to Washington DC or up to Burlington toward the high end. We hold US DOT and MC authority for all ten of the interstate routes we run regularly, and it’s the same crew and truck from Newton to the destination — nothing gets handed off partway.
Can you handle a last-minute or same-day move?
Often, yes. If a lease fell through or a closing date moved up, call (617) 429-6053 and we’ll tell you honestly whether a truck’s open that day or the next. It’s not our standard two-week booking window, so availability depends on what’s already on the schedule, but same-day and next-day moves happen regularly enough that it’s worth the call before you assume nothing’s open.
Which towns do you actually cover?
Newton is home base, and we run regular jobs in Brookline, Waltham, Watertown, Needham, Wellesley, Natick, Framingham, Dedham, and Norwood — all of Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk County is inside our normal radius. If your address is close to that area but not listed, call and ask; chances are the crew’s already been on that street.
What Sets Blue Line Movers Apart Around Newton

Here’s How Blue Line Movers Handles Things Differently Than Most Movers Around Newton

Registered With The Massachusetts DPU — Not Just A Line On The Website

Every mover operating in MA has to be registered with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, and we keep ours current, no exceptions. For jobs that cross into Rhode Island, New Hampshire, or further, we also carry our own US DOT and MC operating authority, filed and active long before the truck leaves the yard.

The Coverage Conversation Happens At The Walkthrough, Not On Moving Day

Basic released-value coverage is included on every job at no charge, and Owen can add full replacement-value protection at your walkthrough if the extra payout ceiling is worth it to you That’s the entire protection conversation, laid out before anything’s on the truck — not an upsell sprung on you once the crew’s already loading.

We Already Know Which Street Won’t Take The Big Truck

Owen spent five years driving oversized trucks for a national van line down streets around Newton, Brookline, and Watertown that they simply didn’t fit — too wide for the corner, too tall for the low branches, the whole job rescheduled because nobody scouted the address first. Every Blue Line Movers job gets sized to the actual street before we assign a truck, not after we’re stuck trying to back one out of it.

Twelve People On Payroll, Zero Rented For The Day

There’s no rotating bench of day labor here — all twelve of us, crew and office both, draw a regular paycheck from Blue Line Movers. Come winter, every truck carries ice melt and floor runners from December through March, and an unplowed driveway means a phone call the evening before, not a crew shoveling snow on arrival.

The Right-Sized Truck For Your Street, Every Time.

The person you’re talking to owns every truck in the yard. Owen built Blue Line Movers on a single lesson learned the hard way over five years driving rigs that didn’t fit: walk the street first, or you’ll be the one backing a truck out of somewhere it never should have gone.
